Frequently Asked Questions About Reiki
What is Reiki?
Pronounced “Ray-key”. Reiki is a therapy classified as a form of energy medicine. (Rei) means universal
energy, (Ki) means vital energy. First started in the late nineteenth century in Japan, Reiki is simply a healing
practice, that does not attack disease but supports our body’s balance and well being and strengthens our
natural ability to heal.
What are the benefits of Reiki?
Reiki is part of holistic or traditional medicine that sees health as balance of the whole body. In contrast,
conventional Western medicine (practiced in the U.S.) focuses on the illnesses of specific body parts. Reiki
can be used in combination with conventional interventions without the usual side effects that medications
provide. Studies have shown that Reiki promotes faster healing of wounds after surgery. Other major benefits
are pain reduction and stress relief. These can be achieved easily with Reiki.
Who can receive Reiki?
Anyone, any age, any condition can receive & benefit from Reiki. Reiki is safe for everyone, even pregnant
clients. Even clients without any specific complaints can benefit from the stress reduction and calming effects
to boost the body’s natural immunity.
What happens during a Reiki treatment?
The client is placed in a lying position on a massage table fully clothed. The reiki practitioner places their
hands on certain areas of the body. Treatments are usually 1 hour with ½ hour lying face up and ½ hour lying
face down.
What will I feel during a Reiki treatment?
Each client experiences different sensations during a treatment. You may feel gentle heat from the
practitioner’s hands. Some people feel a cooling sensation; others feel mild tingling or vibrations. The
majority of clients feel incredible relaxation.
After their treatment, here is what some clients have had to say:
”My pain is gone”
“It felt like I was floating”
“My dizziness is gone”
“I feel so peaceful”
”My headache is much better and I'm not dizzy, I can actually look into the light when I couldn't before”
“I felt your hands were very warm”
Can I benefit from Reiki even if I don’t have a specific problem or concern?
YES! Reiki can benefit everyone. Even when we are well, the daily stressors of life can threaten health and
well being, causing disease. Reiki can provide strength and balance even without disease present. Feelings
of calmness & meditation are beneficial for all of us. Some of Karen’s clients have found that Reiki helps with:
Headaches/Migranes
PMS
Chronic back pain
Dizziness/Vertigo
Sciatic pain
Stress relief
Anxiety
Stomach upset
Hip pain/leg pain
Neck pain
Menopausal symptoms
Sleep disorders
Who can give Reiki treatments?
Specially trained practitioners can give Reiki. There are 3 levels of training: Reiki I, Reiki II & Reiki Master (the
highest level).
Is Reiki safe with the medications I take?
Reiki is always safe since it lifts the body’s own balance. There are no side effects or adverse reactions to
Reiki. Some people actually find that they need less medication after Reiki treatments (i.e. pain, anxiety,
nausea medication) though it is important to consult your physician prior to changing your medication
schedule.
